From the 12th April (Sunday) to the 18th April (Saturday), the largest and most prestigious moot court competition in the world, the 2020 Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition commonly known as the “Jessup Moot”, will be taking place at Washington, DC in the United States.
The Jessup Moot according to the organizers’ website (ilsa.org) is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice or ICJ which is the judicial organ of the United Nations.
The international rounds are a continuation of a series of national qualifying competitions that usually take place in the different countries that are represented at the moot, where at least one of the competitors is declared the winner and would represent their individual countries. The competition pools over 300 universities from the globe.
April 2020 will mark the 60th Jessup Moot after the first ever competition that took place in 1960 and the Uganda Christian University Law Faculty (UCU Law) has been a proud participant for about eight of these competitions. This year marks the ninth time the university will represent the country.
On the 29th February 2020, national qualifying competitions for Uganda were held at Cavendish University where a total of 4 universities including Makerere University and Islamic University in Uganda, competed. UCU Law was declared the winner.
A team of 4 students, Daniela Khanani and Nanfuka Brenda from 4th year, and Ndyamuhaki Joel and Nahwera Lynette from 3rd year represented UCU and won in the qualifying rounds and will be travelling around the 9th April to represent the university and the country on the next global stage.
