On 24 April 2026, the Uganda Christian University (UCU) School of Law made history by emerging as champions of the 1st Intellectual Property Law Moot Competition, held at the Uganda Business Facilitation Centre and organised by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, with co-sponsorship from MMAKS Advocates. Out of 11 universities that submitted memorials, UCU progressed to the semi-finals held on 22 April 2026, where the team ranked first in the competition.

In the finals held on 24 April 2026, in commemoration of World Intellectual Property Day, UCU emerged as the best overall team (winners), and also won awards for best overall written submissions
Their victory came with a prize of full tuition for one academic year for the two oralists who represented the University.
In the final, the team appeared and made submissions before leading intellectual property practitioners. The Team formulated legal arguments on image rights, trademarks, and broadcasting rights.
The Best Overall Team award was presented by the Registrar General of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, Ms Mercy Kyomugasho Kainobwisho. Other guests at the event included the President of FIFA, Hon. Moses Magogo, and the Chief Guest, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports, Dr Kedrace Turyagyenda.
This victory underscores the team’s excellent development in oral advocacy and legal research, having won both the Best Written Submissions award and the Best Overall Team award. Special thanks go to the Dean of the School of Law, Dr Mutesasira Peter, to Joel Basoga, the Head of Moots, and the Law School Staff for their leadership and support.
Moot courts serve as an important foundation in lawyers career. They enable students to development their written and oral advocacy skills. We are pleased with the students performance.
